But first …

Where to start? When did all this begin? I’m going to blame my mother – as good a place to start as any. It was she who started telling me about the family tree…………or was it her mother. Who told her? And who was it taught her the things that she taught my mother, and what did she then teach me?

One of my favourite mother blaming jokes is “A mother’s place is in the wrong”. Right or wrong much of this website is about mothers [mine and others’], grandmothers, aunts, daughters, sisters, sisters-in-law, nieces, granddaughters, friends. It’s about the things I’ve learned from so many. Lots to do with knitting and stitching and other textile matters and lots to do with other important things. There’s lots in these stories too about the men in the family and beyond. Just as important but in different ways.

The story starts in the mists of time – way beyond the furthest branches of this tree, part of many forests. The women are in green and the men in blue. That’s me, fourth from the bottom of the trunk.

Thank you to my mother and my father, their mothers and fathers, our sisters and brothers, daughters and sons and everyone else who has helped ………………. but I hope you all know that. And Ivan too. Of course.
